* Width of upper ledge - 60'. * Depth of upper ledge = beginning
of hole - 18'. * Average width of hole = 250'. * Depth to bottom = 663'. * Shape = fairly rounded, walls
dropping vertically all-around. * Tunnels/Caves etc.: Some -
seemingly not connecting to ocean. * Tidal flow - active, in accordance
with surface conditions, creating mild up/down drifts. * U/W life inside: Limited -
some interesting encounters with larger species can occur - surface is
ocean connected across shallow, protected, bay. * Size by volume: 1.5 Million
cb. yd. * History: All known Blue Holes
are the results of rainwater having soaked through fractures of limestone
bedrock onto the watertable of glacial sealevels - that time having been
the last Pleistocene Epoch (Ice Age), some 15,000 years ago. Maximum depth
of any such hole - anywhere but at Dean's Blue Hole, is 360'. Dean's Blue
Hole's depth suggests formation in association with older - and/or more
complicated - occurances and mechanisms. * In 1992, Jim King, President
of Deep Breathing Systems, performed a Mixed Gas Dive to the bottom of
Dean's Blue Hole = 663'! * Distance from Stella Maris,
by good road: 45 miles. * Maximum depth Stella Maris
leasure diving: 100'. * Experience level required:
Normal. Caution: Firm discipline to be exercised with regards to maintenance
of dive plan - re depth, time etc.! * Special equipment needed:
None - carrying flashlight recommended for colours - visibility is good
all the way (except if strong silt drift). * Charges: Normal day - dive
charges - minimum no. of participants may apply.
